Hair Loss
What is Hair Loss?
Hair loss, medically known as alopecia, refers to a reduction in the amount or thickness of hair on the scalp (or body). It can be temporary or permanent and has many potential causes—from genetics to stress, hormone imbalances, or medical conditions.
Common Types of Hair Loss
Androgenetic Alopecia (Male or Female Pattern Baldness): The most common cause, often inherited. Gradual thinning, especially at the crown or hairline.
Telogen Effluvium: Temporary shedding due to stress, illness, postpartum changes, or crash diets.
Alopecia Areata: An autoimmune condition causing patchy hair loss.
Traction Alopecia: Hair loss caused by tight hairstyles or excessive manipulation.
Scarring Alopecia: Hair loss from scarring conditions or untreated inflammation.

Signs to Look Out for:
Widening parting
Thinner ponytail
Excessive hair in brushes or on pillows
Bald patches
Redness, itching, or flaking on the scalp
Genetics
Hormonal imbalances (e.g. PCOS, menopause, thyroid disorders)
Nutritional deficiencies (iron, vitamin D, protein)
Post-pregnancy changes
Illness or medication
Stress or trauma
Autoimmune conditions
Scalp infections or poor scalp health
Hair loss in women and patients with skin of colour,, and those with afro-textured hair, can sometimes be missed/ misunderstood or misdiagnosed. Certain types of hair loss are more common due to cultural hair practices and differences in hair structure. Understanding these conditions helps ensure the right treatment is given early on.
Prompt diagnosis and treatment are vital to prevent permanent hair loss.
This happens when hair is repeatedly pulled too tightly over time—such as with braids, weaves, tight ponytails, or wigs. It usually shows up as thinning or broken hairs around the hairline and temples. Early changes include short, broken hairs and a receding hairline.
This type of damage makes the hair very fragile. Even simple actions like combing or styling can cause it to snap. It’s often caused by years of chemical straightening, heat styling, or using the wrong type of combs and brushes. Hair breakage can also be the first sign of a deeper issue, such as CCCA, or it might point to deficiencies in key nutrients like iron or protein.
CCCA is a type of permanent hair loss that starts at the crown (top of the scalp) and slowly spreads outward. It mostly affects women of African heritage. A gene called PADI3, which runs in families, has been linked to it. CCCA can be made worse by using damaging hair practices like tight weaves, heavy extensions, and frequent heat styling. Early diagnosis is important to prevent further hair loss.
This type of hair loss forms a band-like pattern around the sides and back of the scalp. In Black women, it is often mistaken for traction alopecia, meaning it may be missed or not treated properly. Unlike traction alopecia, this is an autoimmune condition and needs medical treatment.
